Oh hi! Do you see what I mean about things being flaky around here for a week or so? We had a wonderful time with my brother, sister, and her boyfriend Thursday through Saturday, even seeing a Reds baseball game Friday night (pictures later). Saturday evening we went up to Sherry's and ended up staying through Monday morning (the graduation party on Sunday was in their town). Which brings us to today... *glances at to do list* Uh yeah, I hope to post again before next weekend. lol

Things are a bit better today but it's going to be a wacky week with end of the year school stuff (3 field trips, 2 field days, 1 pizza party, 4 picnics, and 1 sundae party), house guests (today through Saturday), an out of town graduation (Sunday), and more. I did manage to clear out most of my to do list (a few things were completely axed though) and even figured out our schedule in June (two words: not pretty). So I'm not quite so stressed which is a good thing going into this upcoming week. A few odds and ends:

Please keep my good friend Maggie in your thoughts and prayers. This will be the IVF treatment that works, I know it.

Bo didn't win! *pouts*

So the house is clean, the meals planned out, phone calls made. Now all I have to do is fold the laundry, plant some lilies, wash sheets, vacuum the van, spot shot the carpet, and shower. Oh right, and there are these 5 kids running around! Silly me...

Tad bit overwhelmed here at the moment. Will try to knock some stuff off the to-do list and see if it improves.

Oh lord, it's Monday again?

Greg's posted pictures of the before, during, and after of the sliding glass door installation, link.

Star Wars was very good. But sad. And that seems odd to say about a Star Wars movie. Even though we all knew it was coming, it was very depressing watching Anakin become Darth Vader. Lucas did a very good job with the transformation in my opinion. In the beginning of this movie, you still really liked Anakin. And even as he made the wrong decisions that lead him to the Dark Side, you could understand how he thought he was trying to help others. The chills when James Earl Jones takes over the voice and asks about Padme, very sad... Although the chemistry between Christensen and Portman onscreen still sucked, alone they were fine actors but together, it wasn't quite right. And I echo what others have said, this isn't a movie for young kids. It's rated for PG13 for a reason and Zach won't be seeing it in the theatre.

Alright back to all the Monday madness... Have a nice day!

Um, the post about the kids will have to wait. I have a guinea pig cage to clean, the mess of a window and half a wall knocked out of the dining room to clean up (we have a sliding door to the outside! Pictures later when the trim is up), I must exercise (mentally wishing away these 10 extra pounds does not seem to be working), and Greg and I are going out this evening. Probably a quick dinner and then to see Star Wars! I'm excited even though all the reviews say it's dark. I rarely make the trip to anything in the theatre but I've seen the 1 and 2 on the big screen so it would be a shame to miss this one. I hope you all have a lovely Saturday!

So things may be a bit flaky around here for awhile. First off all this therapy stuff has left me more confused than ever. Who am I? Yeah, kinda weird in my head at the moment. It'll get better I'm sure but this kind of thinking makes it difficult to concentrate on witty blog posts.

Second it's the end of the school year. The kids' last day is June 3rd but between now and then we have class field trips, school field days, picnics, and teacher appreciation gifts. And everything is a different day with different requirements times three children. My super mom organizational skills are going to be tasked out.

Third, well... You've all been replaced by a computer game again. *winks* No, not Everquest 2 or Club Pogo, my sister got me hooked on Puzzle Pirates. Rather cheesy but the clothes are cute and I'm saving up to buy me own ship. Arrrr!

Oh and there is that small matter of this website I'm suppose to be building. It's about halfway done and rather than put it up in bits and pieces, I'm waiting until the whole thing is coded to put up all at once. I'm typing html in my sleep...

Tomorrow I'll post an update on the kiddos, they are all fine but I want to brag a bit about Emily. Now back to cleaning, thinking, coding, Puzzle Pirates! Avast ye scurvy dogs!

Directions to make a ruffled jean skirt (Picture).

1. Cut the jeans. The easiest way to get a straight line across is to first cut off the legs about an inch below the crotch seam. Then cut the crotch seam in half (parallel to the waist). Lay it down flat and make sure the waist is even and slowly cut across both the front and the back at the same time. Take less off at first, just in case you blotch it and have to cut another line across. It doesn't have to be perfect, the cuteness of the ruffles is going to be the eye catcher anyway.

2. You will need to cut three strips of fabric, two for the ruffles, one as a connecter for the skirt. The connecter piece is what you sew the ruffles to and is then sewn to the jeans. Here's the math to determine the lengths & widths for the pieces. Measure the resulting opening on the jeans. For the twins' skirts it was 30" (size 6), for Kelly's it was 26" (size 3T). The connector piece will be that length plus 1", (extra is for a 1/2" seam on both ends). So the length for the twins was 31", Kelly's 27". The width is up to you but I used 4-5" (you can always trim this piece later if need be). The ruffles you want to be 1/3 more than the connecter piece in length so you can make the ruffles "ruffle". Still using the above measurements, I cut two pieces 40" long for the twin's and two pieces 36" long for Kelly's. You can go a few inches more than the 1/3 rule if you want a fuller ruffle but remember that most fabric is 42" wide and comes in yards, 36" (I wanted to avoid "piecing" fabric together with this skirt). The width is determined by how long you want the ruffles. You will be folding this piece in half so if you want a 3" finished ruffle, cut the width to 6". I used 6" on the twins and 4" for Kelly's. (Picture)

3. On the connecter, finish one long edge (zig zag stitch, fold/press under twice and straight stitch, or serge). Iron both ruffles in half long ways, right sides out, wrong side of the fabric inside.

4. Make the ruffles. If you've made ruffles before, feel free to use your own method. This is the one I learned from Singer's Sewing for Children. Sew two long basting stitches, one 1/4" from the opened edge of the ruffle (opposite the pressed folded edge), one 1/2" from the opened edge. Leave the threads long, do not trim. (Picture) To "ruffle", pull one of the threads on the 1/2" stitch, scrunching up the fabric on the other thread. I like to scrunch the fabric halfway using the left side thread and then scrunch the remainder from the same 1/2" stitch thread on the right side. The other basting stitch helps stabilize the ruffles and also if you break the first thread (pulling too hard, I've done it too many times to count), you can finish ruffling on the second basting threads. Repeat with 2nd ruffle. (Picture)

5. Time to sew the ruffles to the connecter piece. You will actually undo most of your ruffling to stretch the length of the connecter. I like to work left to right, pining as I go. Place the top of first ruffle about 1/2" above the finished edge of the connecter. If you unruffle too much and the ruffle end doesn't match the edge of the connector, just pull the basting thread again and "re-ruffle". This step takes some practice, don't worry if you have to unpin and try again. (Picture) Sew just right inside the 1/2" basting line, try to keep the basting stitches parallel to the long edge of the connector. Go slow and I usually stop every 10 stitches and readjust the fabric to keep everything straight. I then zig zag the top of the ruffle to prevent loose strings from the fabric (you can finish this raw edge anyway you like but I typically sew with as few passes under the iron or sewing machine as possible).

6. Add the second ruffle to the connecter. Pin using the same method above, making sure this ruffle covers and overlaps by a small amount the stitching of the first ruffle. This may or may not mean the top of the second ruffle matches the top of the connecter (mine didn't, Picture). Sew and finish likewise and then if necessary trim the top of the connecter to match the top of the second ruffle.

7. If you are confident your measurements are all correct, go ahead and sew the skirt into a loop with a 1/2" seam, matching up the ruffle edges. If not, pin the skirt to the jeans, top edge of the connector to the bottom of the jeans, right side of the skirt to the inside. (Picture) Adjust the seam as necessary, unpin, sew and finish (I usually trim the excess fabric as well). Pin the skirt back to the jeans as stated above, I like to have the skirt seam over the back seam of the jeans. Stitch just outside (left of) your stitch that connected the ruffle to the connecter. This should be about 1/2" in and will prevent any of the previously made stitches from showing when you flip the skirt down. You can finish this edge with a zig zag or another method but I actually didn't (laziness...). Flip the jeans inside out and pull the skirt down. Press this seam with the jeans edge down (Picture).

8. Voila, you are finished! Kelly wearing her skirt.

Zach's play pictures! (Sorry we went out for ice cream afterwards and then I uh, forgot...) He played Humpty Dumpty in the play/musical "Lemonade." He had lines and one of the best: when everyone was complaining about their nursery rhymes (like Old Mother Hubbard and too many children, Little Miss Muffet being scared, etc.), he said "People, people! I'm falling apart here!" Okay so maybe you had to be there. Anyway Zach in his costume, Zach saying one of his lines.

Breakfast, kids to school, grocery shopping, lunch, Ally to school, pick up drycleaning, a return to Home Depot (stupid freaking wrong size of mini-blinds again!), Lowes, Target, Zach's school play dress rehearsal, pick up kids from school, snack, homework, dinner, Zach's school play, bedtime.

My day in a nutshell... Will hopefully post pictures of Zach from his play tonight. Happy Monday!

Keep on swimming, keep on swimming, swimming, swimming, swimming...

Thank God the weekend is only hours away.

Ow... I forgot what a pain in the ass migraines are (okay, pain in the head technically). Searching back on my blog, I haven't had one since about September 2004. I have no idea what I was doing right for so many months or what I did so wrong to bring this one on today. Greg's at the office so a nap in a dark quiet cool room isn't going to happen. I guess I'll settle for lots of caffeine, water, and Advil Migraine pills while keeping the TV turned down low for the kids and all the blinds closed. Ow...

Top Ten Reasons Why I Am Crabby Today:

10. Kyle and Kelly can climb over the gates.

9. Kelly crying and wiggling on my lap if I sit down for 2 minutes.

8. Kelly crying and grabbing my legs if I don't sit down for 2 minutes.

7. I don't have anything fun to write about other than why I am an ungrateful whiny person.

6. The fact that I haven't scrapbooked in 8 months now.

5. I am dead tired even though I went to bed at 11pm last night.

4. People. Please don't make me deal with people today, okay?

3. Kelly taking off all her clothes and pull-up and peeing on the floor. (yes Greg, I cleaned it up.)

2. The kids asking the same questions over and over without listening to the answer (which is usually no) until my eye starts twitching funny. Actually they don't stop then either.

1. THE DIRT! No one is allowed outside until someone takes care of this DIRT problem. I am so tired of sweeping up grass clippings, hay from the doghouse, dandelion fluff, and THE DIRT that the kids track in every time they come in from playing outside. And for those of you without kids who think you could handle this problem at the door, YOU CAN'T! It seeps out of their skin hours after you *thought* you had the kids cleaned. I HATE DIRT!

Today I will attempt to clear out my hotmail inbox. I am so bad about returning emails, I'm sorry. I'm about equally as good at returning phone messages unless of course you called to say I had won a million dollars and an all expenses paid trip to Tahiti. That would make it worth it to get over my phone phobia...

The email inbox? Not as scary as the phone. I think it's just an easy thing to procrastinate. I have no clue how a few bloggers (some of the best I might add) manage to email responses to their comments. Some days I feel lucky to read my comments let alone come up with a witty reply. Yeah I'll just be the blogger over in the corner with a big "L" on my forehead.

Anyway I have 24 emails currently in my inbox so this shouldn't be too bad. Also I'm not using my gmail account anymore so stick to my hotmail one (I do check gmail about once a week but don't send my winning confirmation number for the million dollars and Tahiti trip there). I should also go back through some comments because I know a few people asked questions that I never got around to answering (a question about jam making off the top of my head...). So if you have a burning question you need answered by me (ha!), leave a comment and your email address and I'll try to get to it today. This is a limited time offer though because tomorrow I'll go back to procrastinating emails. Consistency is key! Oh wait, that's the rule with little kids, not email inboxes...

And yes Evil One, you are first on my list.

I have nothing interesting to write today. I've already taken out the trash, paid the bills, wrote a grocery list for shopping this afternoon, and made one of the three phone calls I have to make today. Besides the grocery store, I need to stop at the Home Depot for wood stain/sealant and replacement mini-blinds (one of these days the right size will be in stock!). Oh and do a few loads of laundry. For dinner, I will attempt to make these: Radonsky for the New Millennium.

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!

I received my gifts early, Emily and Ally gave me planted flowers in decorated pots and Zach gave me "Can-Do Coupons" (to do little things around the house) on Friday. Yesterday Greg took Em and Ally shopping and came home with a lovely wooden beach for the front porch and a beautiful silver charm bracelet. Oh and new Play Station 2 because our other died. hehe Zach and Ally also made little books at school for me (not sure why Emily didn't, she has a different teacher though), here's a sample from each:

"I love my mom because she always takes me to McDonalds and gets me what I want (cheeseburger ketup [ketchup] pickle only). And she always takes me to see grandma's house, she tucks me [into bed] and she loves me too. My mom is good at cooking and scrapbooking. She is good at scrapbooking because she has made seven scrapbooks. She is good at cooking because she makes our meals every time." -Zach

"I love my mother becauze [because] my mom iz [is] nuiz [nice] and I love mom beauze she maus [makes] popcorn. My mother iz good at baxiball [basketball] and my mom iz good at cookin [cooking]." -Ally

UPDATE: I found Emily's "My Mommy Book" in a pile of stuff she pulled out of her backpack and hid behind a chair. (No idea...) So here's Emily's take:

"My mommy is funny when she go [goes] to the sor [store]. My mommy is happy when it [is] hr [her] batrdae [birthday]. I like to have a prtya [party] with my Mommy." -Emily

So thank you Greg, Zach, Emily, Ally, Kyle, and Kelly for a wonderful Mother's Day! Also a big thank you to my sister-in-law who stayed with the kids last night so Greg and I could go to a friend's party and for getting up with the kids this morning and making pancakes. I love you all. :)

Note to self: I am no longer a college student and cannot eat like one!

Food consumed yesterday (in order throughout the day): a cup of tea, one slice of leftover Domino's sausage, pepperoni, & mushroom pizza *, a bottle of water, a 20oz Mountain Dew, 1/4lb of double chocolate fudge from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory **, a 4 inch piece of Kelly's pretzel dipped in caramel rolled in mini M&M's from RMCF, approximately 10 Domino's buffalo kickers (like spicy chicken nuggets), and half an order of Domino's cheesy bread.

* We finally have a chain pizza store that delivers! (We live in the middle of no where...)

** 1/4lb sounds like a lot (that's what the receipt said) but it was a 2"x2"x1" square.

So um, yeah, my stomach was not too happy with me when I went to bed. This may also explain why the scale does not want to move in a downwards direction.

(And for the record, the kids did not eat like that yesterday. They had Kix with milk for breakfast, chicken nuggets, fries, fruit for lunch, mac-n-cheese and strawberries for dinner. Oh and those pretzel things.)

Titled: SuperMom hangs up her cape

"No capes!" -Edna Mode, The Incredibles

After a long and tiring afternoon yesterday, I realized I'm not going to be able to make it all summer without some sort of help. Greg's commute schedule is going to be early Monday morning (pre-dawn) through Thursday evening, home Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. While he's been gone similar amounts before, he usually ends up with a week to work from home every so often. Not happening this time around.

And during the school year it isn't bad. Only having Kyle and Kelly in the afternoon is a nice breather. I do understand why some people freak when I say I have 5 kids. It can be a bit um, tough at times. Somedays they all entertain each other wonderfully and I'm just cafeteria lady serving up meals. Other days it's one constant fight, tease, annoyance after another between them until they are all sent to separate rooms and my patience is stretched to the breaking point.

So here's where you come in. I know some of you have (or had) "Mommy Helpers" or nannies or whatever part time. I have a girl in mind that I'm going to ask first. She's watched the kids 3 times before and everyone seems to get along well. I'm thinking 4 hours twice a week, like Tues/Thurs afternoons 12-4pm. I'll probably stick around one of those afternoons to mow the lawn or scrub the showers or get the house ready for the market. But I'm unsure what to offer her. We've been paying her about $10 an hour ($2 per kids per hour) but that's been short periods of time (three hours or less). It's also been short notice as well so I felt like she deserved a little extra.

Is it cheap of me to think that I could pay her less than $80 a week because it will be steady money for her and also yeah, I am cheap, I hate to pay that much. (I don't place a high value on my sanity obviously.) Greg thinks $50 is fair because at a regular job, she'd probably make $6 an hour (actually less after taxes). So I guess my question is how much do your pay or if you have a teenage daughter currently doing this now, how much does she charge?

Back to Greg's new job... Yippee, congratulations, let's throw a party to celebrate! The details: it's with the same company, it's a huge promotion, and just an amazing level for him to be at right now. From the official company email:

"... pleased to announce the promotion of Greg to Director of EMR/HIM Product Management. In this role Greg will be responsible for all aspects of developing the EMR/HIM Division, including product development, marketing strategy and execution of the business plan for the products in order to meet the projected sales targets and deliverables."

EMR=Electronic Medical Records, HIM=Healthcare Information Management

*more celebrating*

Which brings me to a rumor floating around. This new position does mean we have to move. The company's main office is in the DC/Maryland area and with his old position at this company, Greg was working from home, traveling to the sites, and also spending about a week a month at the main office. The new one? Yeah he needs to be in the office every day with the occasional traveling to sites and trade shows. So we're moving!

But not right away. Greg asked to commute for awhile but we will be moved out there by 2006 (a Christmas break move is entirely possible). If you haven't priced the housing market lately, well... Our 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath on a 1/3 acre in a nice neighborhood near a decent large city is about $150,000-$200,000 in the Midwest. A 4 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath on 1/10 acre is at least a half a million dollar home out there. Ouch... But don't worry, the pay raise and incentives will match the differences in cost so we won't be living in a cardboard box in an alley. And it's very nice that we have the time and aren't rushed to sell our house and move right away.

As to how I feel about it? I'm excited. I've been ready for a change of location for over a year and while it sucks that we'll be farther away from family and friends, we'll be in a really cool location. I'm looking forwards to trips into DC and the ocean/Chesapeake Bay being less than an hours drive. (I've been to DC twice, Maryland once.) I think it'll be an awesome experience for the kids. While I'm a bit sad that they won't be the "small town/farm kids" like I was growing up, it would be crazy to pass this opportunity up.

But back to the main topic, way to go Greg, I'm proud of you!

So much for it being a better day... While we had lovely walk to the library and back, the day was pretty much a wash. Muddy kids, fights over Barbie doll clothes (what happened to the universal rule of naked Barbies), sticky keyboard (thanks for the suggestion SilverCreek Mom, I'll have to try that later), Greg won't be home until Friday instead of Thursday (he's at the main office in Maryland), and a broken computer. Well it wasn't really completely broken but now I can proudly say:

My computer is held together with duct tape.

(I wonder if I can get that on a bumper sticker.)

Okay, okay, so technically it's only one piece of the computer. And the duct tape wasn't completely necessary but it'll help keep the part in place so I won't go through all the fun of this afternoon again. (And no, it's not touching any wires or metal pieces or the motherboard for all you computer geeks who are currently hyperventilating.) I have this little USB port in the front of the computer and it wiggled itself loose and fell into the case. And not to bore you with all the details but it wasn't easy to get to and involved cursing, an out of state phone call, and accidentally teaching Kelly "oh shit." (Proud Mommy Moment right there. *sigh*) So to keep the USB port from wiggling loose again (you'd have thought the case manufacturer would have screwed the thing down but no...) I used a piece of duct tape.

So hey, my computer is held together with duct tape! Go me! Where's the vodka?

Is anyone else having one of those mornings?

It started at 7:50 with Ally crying. "The tooth fairy didn't come!" Shit! I'm terrible at this tooth fairy thing. I need more planning time. One day is not enough for me to be ready for overnight gift giving. Or in this case a couple of hours because the tooth came out at dinner time. I'm a really awesome Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, and St. Nick (he's the shoes on Dec 6th. Or is it the 5th?). So being the quick thinker that I am (ha! not really), I sent her to the bathroom to go potty while I distracted Emily (still in the room) and slipped a dollar into Ally's pillowcase. Genius, n'est pas? Tooth fairy duties fulfilled, I went back to bed. hehe

Where Kyle and Kelly were bouncing. Okay whatever, I won't get two nanoseconds more of sleep. Then the phone rang. Which I left downstairs. Ally was cheering about her dollar from the tooth fairy as I stumbled down to grab the phone. The furnace inspection guy is on his way! At 8am. I was told 9-11. Uh, no can do, dropping the kids off at school at 8:30. She said she'd take care of it.

Breakfast! The kids ran over me to get to the kitchen. And then I saw it. "Wednesday One Hour Delay" written on the chalk board. Checked with Zach. Yes, today is Wednesday. Called furnace company back. She said he'll still be on his way then, probably 8:40.

As I was pouring breakfast Kelly decided to make the stinkest diaper ever. Why does she do this when we are sitting down for a meal? The kids went to the toy room while I changed her (I don't blame them!). Finally the kids ate after a long discussion on which is better, Kix or Frosted Flakes (sugar won out over "Mother Approved").

After breakfast (Kelly only spilt her milk once) I sent the kids upstairs to get dressed and was heading up that way for myself when the doorbell rang. At 8:20. That was the shortest 40 minutes ever.

So I'm thinking the day can only get better from here. Course I do have this small problem of my number keypad and delete/insert/end/blah/blah/blah keys sticking because I uh, spilt Mountain Dew on my keyboard yesterday. Oh and Q is sticking too. Which makes absolutely no sense because it's on the complete opposite end of the keyboard from where I spilt the Mountain Dew. But with the way this morning is going, it probably makes perfect sense in some weird alternate universe. *bangs head on desk*

PSA (Public Service Announcement)

I may or may not have been hit by an email worm. A blogger friend sent an email that resembles the W32.Sober.O@mm worm last night and not really paying attention (it was after 11pm, my brain was already shut off) I opened the attachment. Hotmail actually said it wouldn't download because there was a virus but I'm not sure how much I trust them.

Spybot, Ad-Aware, and 3 virus scans didn't find the worm on my computer. I deleted all my contacts in my hotmail account just in case it's still here somewhere. (It's one of those mass mailing worms that uses your address book to send itself.) But if you've receive an odd email from me with an attachment, don't open it and please leave a comment. (As we all know, I take at least a month to respond to emails so you weren't due to for an email right now anyways. hehe) And as always, update your virus scan software and run often! That's your PSA for the day. *cue cheesy end of PSA music*

Okay so the new website... I need to code about 7 pages and then do some extra pages under all those. Course I haven't quite figured out how to upload the html to my web host yet. Ah well, I'm sure I'll get it eventually. It's just going to take some time and if you haven't noticed, my time to do anything that involves "thinking" can be a bit limited. Kids are kinda like leeches on your brain cells.

Oh, oh! I've been organizing! Which makes me very happy. Even though I haven't been scrapbooking, my stuff was out of order just because Chaos Theory is being proven at my house daily. I had also bought a few new supplies (paper!) that needed to be put away and misplaced my Fiskars Softouch Micro-tip scissors. But I found them and there was much rejoicing! You have no idea how much I love these scissors, it's a little scary. So I have pictures, organized supplies, and 8pm bedtimes, there's nothing holding me back now! Oh except that annoying creativity muse...
