Week 9, Aug 7-11

Make your own ice cream! Nothing says summer like cold ice cream on a hot August day. There are all sorts of ice cream machines on the market including novelty ball ice cream makers. Or try one of the "old fashioned" ways like Ice Cream in a Bag or Coffee Can Ice Cream. I can feel the brain freeze coming on already!

Collages: aka Lots of random stuff glued together in an artistic way. Start the creations on a piece of heavy poster board or cardboard that will stand up to lots of glue. Then add scraps of paper, old magazines and newspapers, ribbons, stickers, the sky's the limit! Bonus: The Origin of Collage

Go Fly a Kite! This one is as simple as it sounds. Buy a kite or if you are really crafty (or crazy!) make your own. Then go fly it! Hopefully it's a breezy day and avoid any areas with trees or power lines. Sing "Let's Go Fly a Kite."

Your Kitchen really is a Restaurant: Let's give the kids what they expect at meal time. Except have them do all the work! Help them make a list of foods available in the kitchen and then design menus with prices. Borrow the play money from the monopoly game and open up your restaurant! If the menu is simple enough, let the kids be the cooks and servers. (You can be the disgruntled customer, hehe.) You can play this all day or just for one meal. Joy is chocolate chip cookies for breakfast.

Perseids Meteor Shower The best viewing date for this is actually Aug 12th although there will be an almost full moon disrupting the show. (That Moon, always causing trouble...) Here's a good website with different meteor shower dates and viewing tips: StarDate .
