Assateague Island, May 12-14, 2006

For our first camping trip of 2006, one of Greg's co-workers told him about Assateague National Park, a barrier island off the ocean coast of Maryland.

There are wild horses that roam the island, once domesticated horses left by early settlers that have adapted to the sea grass and salty diet, leaving them the size of ponies. We saw about 10 during our stay along with many deer, rabbits, crabs, and sea birds.

So we tent camp. And I suppose this time, we were "primitive" camping because there were two latrines and a cold water shower stall (actually seen in the picture with the horse). I didn't quite realize that when we reserved a camp spot last month. But the fact that the ocean was only thirty feet beyond the sand dune (on the left in the above picture) more than made up for it.

Inside the tent at bedtime on Friday night.

The fact that the ocean temperature was only 50-some degrees didn't keep the kids from going out into the water either. They played on the beach for hours on Saturday.

Kelly being cheesy.

On Saturday evening, we drove up to Ocean City (about 10 minutes from Assateague Island). The boardwalk was fun, we bought the famous Thrasher's french fries, ice cream, and Ocean City's best funnel cakes. The kids rode a few rides (the carousel and bumper cars) and we walked along the beach.

Ocean City play spot. We really didn't have the whole beach to ourselves, I just waited until everyone else was out of the picture.

You can see the Ocean City boardwalk from their webcam, Greg called a co-worker and had him take a few screenshots. I outlined us in pink.

Sunset over looking the camp site. Our tent is the very left one and the ocean is to my back. Yes, I'm sure sunrises over the ocean are beautiful too but I wasn't getting up that early...

Ground fires weren't allowed in the camp area but were allowed on the beach. We roasted hot dogs and made smores.

Sunday morning was very gray, foggy, and windy.

One last look at the ocean before heading home.
